For a story on allergies a few weeks ago I experimented with a "poor man's macro" by holding a 50mm lens backwards to the front of a 70mm lens, which caused the vignetting in the top image. We ran a macro shot of just the pollen, but these are a couple of outtakes that I like. It was tough to get what I wanted in focus, because every slight breeze moved what I was trying to focus on, but I had fun with it.

Val, I haven't done this in years, but it looks like you're having fun. I think the first photo is stronger than the second--there's a lot of plant matter competing with your subject underneath the flower, and also on the lower-left and lower-right edges of the frame.
Now, if you get tired of holding up the 50mm to your other lens, you might want to buy a macro coupler that will let you just screw them together.
Alternatively, you could put a close-focus lens (a really thick magnifying filter) on your telephoto lens.
